The Mountain area is clearly visible on the Western edge of the state, these are the Appalachian Mountains, the world's oldest, and contain the highest peaks in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Mount Mitchell, off the Blue Ridge Parkway just north-east of Asheville,
is the highest at 6,684 feet.
